She just can’t help herself

Its just another day in the life of the Aspie Mama and her (what would have been an Aspie) daughter on the spectrum.

Mama: “Why don’t you check out the new goldfish?”

Daughter: “Not without Mama.”

Mama: “Ok, well I am going to sit here and talk to the adults for a few. It might get boring.”

Daughter: “No. You have to come and look at the goldfish with me.”

Mama: “I may consider it in five minutes. I need to have a conversation first.”

Daughter: “Ok. I will count the 300 seconds, so you don’t lose track of the time.”

Mama: Looks over that the other two adults who are sitting out on the porch with them and they cackle a little, knowing the antics which I face consistently. Mama has now forgotten where she is in her conversation and begins to struggle for the words that were just there. A light bulb flashes in her mind (oddly enough, the old cartoons also play a rerun in her mind) as she begins talking again about the garden.

Daughter: Interrupting mid-sentence (something we have been working on. I know I had an extremely hard time with this when I was younger), says, “Mama, it’s been 180 seconds.”

Mama: Sighing, “I said I would consider it in five minutes.”

Daughter: “Well you tell me five minutes all the time and only give me three minutes, payback is a thing.”

Mama: Speechless as the other two adults sitting on the porch are now laughing.

Daughter: Seeing the look on Mama’s face and seeing how funny she must be to get the two adults to laugh in this way, smiles with satisfaction. ****After reading this to daughter, she corrected this line and said, “I dont know what they were thinking, I just had the instinct to smile.”****

Mama: Shakes her head at the sheer intellect that her daughter portrays and stands up. “Let’s go look at the goldfish.” Mama looks over at the other two on the porch, “I guess she won that one. I’ll be right back.” They nodded with smiles, one of them giving the daughter a ‘high-five’
